Gardens provide a perfect opportunity for the creation of harmonious surroundings. They are great places to retreat to. It is a place to relax from the stresses of everyday life.
I would like to share my knowledge and experiences of creating gardens with harmonious intent.
Whether you are a home landscape designer or you are engaging a professional, there are four basic elements of landscaping design; form, line, texture and balance.
FORM is the shape of the plants in your garden, i.e. upright, spreading or weeping and the structure of its branching.
LINE is the arrangement of plants influencing the eye movement, on both the horizontal and vertical lines of plant groups and the transition from one area to another.
TEXTURE refers to the surface or size of the foliage and blooms of a plant. This is seen as large or small rough or smooth and the spectrum of colors.
BALANCE is the visual attraction, which brings all the other elements together.
Gardens that evoke a sense of mystery offer diversity. Curved lines rather than straight ones, give a sense of flow and unhurried meandering.
A variation in color, sounds, fragrance and depth of vision using light and dark foliage.
The use of screening and statuary give a sense both of texture, dimension and personal character.
There are a few basic rules to creating a beautiful, harmonious and personal garden that enhances your home and surroundings.
- Having a basic plan.
- Making it personal
- Functionality.
- Understanding the natural habitat of your area.
- Having four seasons color and aesthetics.
- Irrigation
